I’ve wanted to blog for a long time. I always knew I wanted to talk about technology. It’s a huge part of my life. I’ve worked as a programmer/developer/software engineer for the vast majority of my professional life. I grew up with technology.
My professional life is fulled with DB2, SQL, MVS, TSO, VSAM files, COBOL, Easytrieve and JCL on mainframes and I-series machines. I’ve supported systems that paid millions of dollars of bills and created millions of communications. I’ve dabbled in MS Access, Python, RegEx, HTML, CSS, Xcode, and GCP. I’ve automated invoice feeds, balanced reports to the penny and build a tax form process from scratch. It’s fun and a challenge and I love it.
My childhood was seeped with technology from the Little Professor to my dad’s home built computer. The first computer I programmed on was Apple IIe in a summer camp at the high school computer lab. I vividly remember my grandparents’ tv remote that actually clicked. It was very posh. We didn’t have one at my house. Technology bewitched and colors my entire life.
In junior high, I decided to be a writer. There was speaker at an assembly who talked about writing fiction. All I remember is a vampire sneaker. I wrote and wrote. Horror stories and a rambling fantasy stories that went on after college. I could never figure out endings or get to a complete first draft.
I studied history back in my college days and love research. I wrote my senior thesis on my other passion – comic books. The internet has made research so much easier and cheaper. No more late fees from the library. I’ve fallen into several research rabbit holes while pondering the memories of my grandparent’s tv. Turns out Zenith has an interesting history.
It’s been a long time coming, this convergence of my passions. I’ll reminisce about toys, computers, the evolution of remote controls and other technological bits from back in the day. I’ll post bobs of useful things from my professional life too. This blog is my love letter to technology.
PS – Feel free to skip the professional posts if you want to! 🙂
